Data Back-up

Many business owners are risking the years of hard work they invested
in their businesses by failing to properly backup their data. Are you
one of them? If an event like a fire, power outage, theft, equipment
failure, virus, or simple operator mistake caused you to lose all of
your mission-critical data, how soon would your business be able to
recover? Or would it recover at all? We're asking this question because
studies show that over half of all companies who lose their data to
some kind of accident, equipment failure, or disaster, fold within 6 months of doing so.
Studies
show that over half of all companies who lose their
data to some kind of accident, equipment failure, or disaster, fold
within 6 months of doing so. Everyone knows they should be doing data
backup, very few businesses or individuals actually do it. Even those
who do, often do it wrong. They back everything up onto a tape backup
unit, then store the tape in the drawer next to the computer. What good
does that do if there is a fire?
To
be effective, backups must be stored offsite. I recommend doing it on
DVD, since as far as we know that data should be good for up to 100
years. Magnetic media like tape on the other hand deteriorated fairly
rapidly over time. With DVD you also have a fairly universal
format that will likely be playable for many years into the future.
Avoid proprietary media (anybody still use Zip or Jazz drives?).
An
option once a company trusts you is to set up a system that can
automatically and remotely back up their data, to your server or to one
of the services online that provide storage space.Follow-up
