Part-Time Money

Introductions

Welcome to the world of part-time money. This is designed to give you all kinds of ideas, hopefully one or more you will try. One of the good things is that since these are part-time, you are not making a long-term commitment. You can try several at once if you like.

I try to give resources you can turn to for more information. The nature of the Internet being what it is, if you find a link that doesn't work please let me know. If you follow a link and you suspect it might now be a scam site, let me know. If you discover something great, or a resource that should be included, also let me know. The goal is to provide the best possible information for those seeking to make part-time money.

Keepers

Sometimes the best way to make extra money is to keep more of it from slipping away.

If you can refinance your house to pay off credit card or other high interest debt, that is usually a good move. Home loans are below 7%, many credit card rates are over 20%. Caution - this is only a good move if you have the discipline to:
1. Never charge on your card again, and
2. Devote the money you save to paying off the refi loan

Start-up

I recommend you set up a private mailbox at a place like the UPS store - you get to use the street address of that store as your address, which does two really good things:
1. You avoid zoning issues, you now have a commercially zoned address, and
2. You've added a layer of security, now people don't know where you live.

I'd also recommend you get set up with Paypal and Sqaure.com to make it easy for people to pay you.

Kids

Love kids?

Having a part-time business focused on kids means that you can have a long-term impact on the lives of young people. It also means you don't have to deal with them all the time.

Believe it or not, you can get paid just for telling stories. Most people get started reading to groups of kids, but then start ad-libbing and adapting different voices for different characters. Eventually, you could enter national story-telling competitions!

Hobby

"Do what you love and the money will follow"

I joke that this is not true - I've been doing what I love and have never found the money following me anywhere, no matter how quickly I turn around.

Still, what could be better than doing something you enjoy - and would be doing whether or not you made money at it - and then ..... making money at it?

There are many hobbys and crafts that can be turned into profitable part-time businesses.

One of the more suprising turnarounds has been the resurgence of the popularity of the apron. It used to be very common for housewives in the kitchen to always have an apron on till the meal was ready, then take it off and sit down to eat. Then for many years people got away from using them.

Now, they are back with a passion. There are even stores specializing in selling aprons. People now want a different apron for each holiday, and aprons with funny sayings are very popular. It isn't just the ladies either - guys are wearing aprons for barbecuing and for working on their cars.

If you know sewing, an apron is about the simplest pattern you can do.

You can expand your line and your profits by making oven mitts, caps, etc, to go along with the aprons.
Make aprons for little kids, or for dogs!

Animals

Love animals?

Make money with that passion. People are spending fortunes on their animals these days. Americans spend more than $30 billion annually on their pets. You might as well capitalize on that and your passion for pets.

Spread the word about your pooper-scooper service by advertising in local newspapers, pinning fliers to bulletin boards, and through dog-related businesses and clubs in the community. Most services charge a flat monthly rate of between $30 and $60 to stop by customers' homes or businesses weekly to clean up their yards, which takes no more than 10 minutes per visit. You'll need reliable transportation, a cell phone, garbage buckets, plastic bags, shovels, gloves and a good pair of rubber boots.

Green Thumb

If plants are your passion, there are many niches that you can get into for part-time income. We are not even going to cover growing plants that are illegal still in many jurisdictions ;-)

You'll find a pdf book here: 14-Best-Profitable-Plants-eBook.pdf

With a single hive and some equipment for an initial investment of about $300, a home beekeeper could harvest about 100 pounds of honey, or 36 quarts, every six months, said Ray Morris, who works as a professor of engineering at Florida Polytechnic University in his "day job." At the going price of up to $20 per quart of honey in today's market, that's more than enough to recoup the initial investment. You can also make money from pollination placement of hives near farms and orchards and gardens. Even more profitable products from your bee hives will be beeswax and what is called 'royal jelly'.

Tools

Are you handy with tools?

Many of us are klutzes when it comes to tools, and use others to get things done.

If you can fix things well and for a reasonable rate, you'll be called back over and over - because things are always breaking.

Stuff

Have extra stuff in your house? Can't park the car in the garage for lack of room? Storage space full?

Don't think of it as stuff, think of it as inventory! Some people are very well inventoried.

Inventory because there is just about nothing in your house that you cannot sell for cash.

Yard sales are the simplest way to get rid of a lot of stuff quickly and at a good profit.

Some jurisdictions limit the number of yard sales one house can do per month, but it is not unusual to clear hundreds of dollars in one day. You'll also have the satisfaction of more space. So you can buy more stuff. So you can sell more. It does get addictive.....

Knowledge

Your greatest asset - any human's greatest asset - is between the ears. The human brain is perhaps the most amazing thing in the universe. Experts estimate that, over the course of a lifetime, modern human brains will retain up to 1 quadrillion pieces of information.

Time to turn some of that information into money!

Watch late night informercials, and you'll see people telling you how to get rich with classified ads, how to buy houses with no money down, or how to invest in gold futures. These people are not getting rich by buying houses with no money down, but by selling you information.

Write out a how-to and you have a product you can sell.

It can be in video form, on a CD, in print, or in one of several e-book formats.

We seem to have an insatiable appetite for how-to type information. A great advantage is that you write it once, you have a product you can sell over and over and over again.

This could be information you know, or can research, or even information that is in the public domain that you package and sell.

Talent

Some folks have musical talent, while there are those of us that cause people to flee in horror when we try.

If you are blessed with talent, it would be a shame and a waste not to use it for pleasure and for gain.

There are many opportunities to use your voice to make money. This could be the audio track for a commercial, a message on a voice mail system, reading of text to create an audiobook, or the voice of a video game character.
You will generally be paid $200 and up for an hour of your time or less.

Food

Are you a great cook?

Turn your culinary skills into cash and cook up some part-time profits!

Many busy households are giving themselves a treat a couple times a month - they have a personal chef come in and prepare a meal for them.

Language

Do you know a foreign language? Are you skilled with the English language?

Part time oppotunities exist for polyglots and those good at expressing themselves in English.

Freelance writing work abounds. There are tens of thousands of magazines - all need articles. There are millions of websites and blogs that will also pay for articles.

People

Love people?

If you are affable or find it easy to get people to agree with you, you can turn that charismatic skill into profit.

Blessed are the peacemakers...

You can make money as a mediator - the go-between that tries to get two opposing sides to reach agreement. You don't have to be an attorney (except in a few legal settings) or a psychiatrist to be a mediator.

Tech

Consider yourself somewhat of a geek?

Most people are intimidated by their computers and gadgets, and would not think of 'messing with one' for fear of breaking it.

If you have ever opened up your computer, you'll find that everything in there is modular. Each module is held in with 1,2 or 4 screws and a wire clip. Computer repair rarely involves soldering any more.

Time

If you have plenty of time, you can trade that for money.

There are a lot of opportunities to get paid for doing what you would be doing anyway. You have to get your oil changed anyway, why not do it so it is not only free but you make a little extra money?

Mystery shopping, also known as secret shopping, involves posing as a regular customer in order to evaluate the goods and services that a business provides. Mystery shopping will reimburse you for what you have to spend, plus a shop fee for filling out the evaluation form.

There are a lot of scams in this field, so be careful. If an opportunity is on the up and up, you won't have to pay an application fee or deposit a check and wire money on to someone else.

Space

If you have or can find space, turn that into money.

International students come here to learn English, and they want to learn how American families live. They could be coming for High School, College or post Graduate study, but they all share one thing in common - they need a place to stay. They much prefer, and their parents prefer, that this be in a home-stay environment rather than a dorm.

You can contact the International Studies program at your local college. I currently have a student from Vietnam, one from Korea, one from Japan and one from China living in my home in my 4 extra bedrooms. They pay us room and board (we provide one meal a day weekdays, they have free run of the kitchen other times). Not only is the income welcome, but they bring liveliness and a youthful perspective to the house.

There are also some organizations that do this on a larger-than-local basis.

Online

Many people who want to make money part-time would like to do it in their pajamas, through the screen of their computer.

The online world is full of scams, so please be careful. You should never have to pay money to find out what something is all about, or to pay to be 'eligible' to make some money. You also can't rely on 'review' sites, scammers often create sites telling you that their scam is legit. If you are in doubt whether something is legitimate or not, please feel free to email me.

Believe it or not, some people get paid for doing Internet searches. There are also a lot of scams in this field.

Seasonal

Jobs

I know, a four letter word.

Still, some prefer a paycheck to entrepreneurship.

http://aol.careerbuilder.com/jobseeker/jobs/advancedsearch.aspx and then select part-time, contract and/or seasonal, as desired.

Vehicle

If you have a cellphone and a vehicle, and most of have both of those, then you can start a lucrative sideline business.

Don’t need your car on the weekend or during the day? Going on a trip? Services like Getaround and RelayRides let you rent out your car by the hour, while FlightCar arranges for an incoming traveler to rent your car rather than you having to pay for airport parking and letting it sit idle.
