To me, the kitchen table (or island or breakfast bar) is the heart of the home. They have witnessed homework, school projects, paying bills, and of course, cooking. But more importantly, it's not necessarily the tangible things that have happened, but who has sat around the table, whether still present or now gone (college, moved out, or passed on) and the discussions and exchanges that have taken place at that table. Planning a wedding, party, baby shower, discussing a divorce, exchanging difficult words, planning a funeral. Hoda Kotb said it best when she was talking about her deceased dad, "When a parent (or family member) passes away, it is especially noticeable at the dinner table."
It is the people and family members around the table, sharing a meal or discussion together, that is at the center of the home. The hands that so lovingly prepared the food to nourish bodies and hearts. Coming together to spend time and be together, whether for a good or bad reason...the kitchen table is at the center of it all.
What does your kitchen table (or island or breakfast bar) represent to you and your home? What is one of the major or memorable events that has taken place at your table that you would like to share?
